  • This work is a study examining the theological concept of calling in the life of church planters. It is concerned with questions regarding the biblical nature of calling, its historical application, and its current impact upon church planters. The thesis focuses, thought not exclusively, upon church planters within the Southern Baptist Convention, of which the author is a part. This convention plants between fifteen hundred and two thousand churches in North American every year. The thesis begins with a presentation of the problem: that the Southern Baptist Convention has moved away from evaluating church planting candidates for ministry primarily based upon their call and their character. These qualities have been replaced with a premium upon competence. The author then looks at the call biblically, theologically, and historically to see how others have responded to this concern in other settings. The work then presents the project description, in which the author developed a questionnaire, a conference, and a series of interviews with church planters to assess their opinion about this need in their own lives. It closes with a chapter on conclusions based upon the project and implications for further studies that still need to be done. A question the thesis poses is whether these mileposts differ between church planters and all others who are called into ministry.
