  • Under the leadership of the author, ten members of Central United Church, Toronto, Canada, embarked on a spiritual journey (nineteen weeks) which emphasized the methods of prayer which come to us from the contemplative (mystical) tradition. Aids such as books, audiotapes, weekly meetings and a guide were provided. Research included an initial interview, an interim evaluation and a final evaluation (written and oral). The project showed that 1) there is a place for congregational growth or prayer groups which emphasize contemplative practice; 2) the ministry of spiritual direction is important; 3) the ministry of spiritual direction requires special training programs.
