Abstract
  • Pastoral preaching in an addictive culture can be therapeutic when it is informed by the theology and method of the 12 step program pioneered by Alcoholics Anonymous. Such preaching involves a measure of self-disclosure, providing identification between preacher and hearer. The author did qualitative research with men and women in recovery who were participating in Serenity Retreats, and who affirmed the need for a preacher's self-disclosure and awareness of recovery motifs. He also did similar research within a parish setting, with like results. Included are chapters on the theological foundations of the 12 Step programs, pastoral care preaching, and autobiographical preaching.
