Abstracto

The biblical doctrine of providence is one of the most neglected and misunderstood doctrines in Christianity. The author researched Puritan preaching in general and Puritan Increase Mather's preaching in particular to apply some helpful insight for modern pastors in addressing how 'special providences' such as tornados, fires, and earthquakes should be biblically interpreted. The thesis the author argued is that pastors desiring to provide biblical instruction regarding natural disasters and circumstances of life should embrace a worldview similar to Increase Mather's, one which understood providential acts as either assurance of God's faithfulness or calls to repentance.
