  • An exploration was made of the role of the internal God representations in the lives of clinical pastoral education students as they develop, refine and express their pastoral identities in ministry with patients in a large urban hospital. Interviews were conducted with students, patients and training supervisors. Two final interviews explored the impact of such a study on the training process. The God representations have a prominent and vital role in the development and expression of pastoral identities: a likeness is cultivated, differentiation of God and pastor maintained, divine-human boundaries are explored and barriers are erected against the 'not I' of both pastor and God.
