- This paper proposes a methodological approach for vision discernment using the operational development process called Appreciative Inquiry (AI). AI is a process that can lead to vision discernment by building on past successes and creating a sense of missional alignment. AI is based on organizational and social theory that, when combined with theological understandings, provide the church and leadership with a methodology for discernment that will engage a large portion of a congregation. This is a grounded study that engaged a 1200+ membership church in a large AI. Using the tools of AI, a vision statement was composed and became formative in the church's mission.
