- This paper seeks the renewal of the deacon as a lay order in the church, but more importantly suggests that the diaconate needs to be rethought in terms of its tradition and biblical history as the model for discipleship and lay ministry in and through the church. Deacons need to be trained and equipped for ministry through a diaconate that is seen as the worshipping and serving core of the church. The koinonia of the diaconate through their prayer life, study, and learning together; and their commitment to the ministry of Jesus Christ in the church and through their own lives will begin a process of renewal for the church. They will, in effect, become salt, light, and leaven for the church. This paper proposes that the lay office of deacon can be a means for church renewal and evangelism.
