This paper sets forth the hypothesis of an unconscious church standing in the same relationship to the conscious church as the individual's unconscious does to his conscious psyche. An experimental method is described by which this unconscious church is revealed in a congregation. Jung's word association technique is adapted and used to test a congregational sample. Results reveal that half or more of the subjects in the sample gave significant responses to 14 out of the 100 words. Mathematically, this is more than would be expected to occur by chance. It is concluded that this pattern of 14 words demonstrates the presence of the unconscious church. Analysis of the stimulus words and the words given in response to those stimulus words reveals that this unconscious church is concerned with relationships with God and others. It evidences a struggle between good and evil, between the archetypal symbol of the hero and that of the betrayer, between the ego and the shadow. Implications for ministry are explored and applications are made to pastoral work and to church life.
