  • This thesis explores how a middle judicatory can be more effective in helping churches facing adaptive challenges. This project began as an attempt by the author, a middle judicatory executive in the United Church of Christ, to implement a process of ministry review in a number of congregations. It included an ecclesiological study and a review of current sociological research on the office of the pastor and the role of middle judicatories in the UCC. When the congregations failed to implement the process, the author employed the leadership theories of Ronald Heifetz to better understand how middle judicatories can assist churches facing adaptive challenges.
