- This study focuses on the dynamics that contribute to engagement in preaching, when people have the sense of participating in an experience with God. Engaging preaching attends to a network of relationships including God, the text, the preacher, and the congregation. Four genres are examined as vehicles for engagement: the narrative, the character sketch, the group study, and the monologue. Results indicate the congregation experiences a positive degree of engagement when the preacher attends to connected relationships. Genres effect engagement by offering distinctive listening experiences. Responses varied according to the degree that persons were familiar with the genre and felt comfortable participating in it.
