  • This thesis explores the relatively rapid rise of Unitarianism in Iowa in the last quarter of the 19th century, and its equally rapid decline. Using original sources, the author shows how a liberal 'vision,' above and beyond the 'modernism' of the times, contributed to an unprecedented level of church growth, individual enthusiasm, and social and political influence. A significant factor was the large number of women ministers serving in Iowa in positions of power. After 1900, eastern denominational leaders and other factors discouraged women and undermined rural midwestern churches; by 1915, few remained.
