  • Much church life is organized around pathways of discursive meditation. But according to John of the Cross, many people will eventually begin to pray using pathways of contemplation. The dark night, or as it should be called, obscure night, inaugurates the bewildering transition between these two modes of prayer. Although people in the obscure night may not sense it, God works intimately with them in this transformation.
