- The Wesleyan Quadrilateral, based on Scripture, tradition, reason, and experience, can provide a theological foundation for using coaching as a ministry tool in the Church. The author explored scriptural precedents for coaching relationship: Moses and Joshua, Naomi and Ruth, and John the Baptist and Jesus; coaching precedents in Christian and Methodist tradition, i.e., the early Church Mothers and John Wesley's relationships to his lay preachers, particularly, the women; a survey of the field in contemporary coaching; and personal experiences in coaching and coach training. Practical applications are suggested for coaching, especially 'pastoral coaching,' once 'baptized' for use in the Church.
