  • This study concludes that metaphor is the most plausible means of talking about the truth and glory of God. By using a semantic differential technique, responses to both metaphorical and propositional language were measured. The function of metaphor is examined in regard to clarity, emotion, beauty, imagination, detail, meaning and appeal. Both the statistical significance and practical significance of this are discussed. The relationship of analogous language to cerebral specialization and logical positivism is noted. It is asserted that the strength of metaphor to convey spiritual truth explains the power and mystery of preaching over the centuries.
