  • This project proposes that readers of the Old Testament, by reading 'against the grain' of certain texts, will discover that stories that seem to establish patriarchal oppression may also subvert such establishments. After exploring the strategies of counter-reading, the project conducts a four-session workshop in which participants are invited to counter-read the stories of Sarai (Gen 12), Dinah (Gen 34), and the daughter of Jephthah (Jdg 11:29-40). The project demonstrates that such counter-reading opens new avenues of interpretation for difficult texts and encourages readers in reading for justice and redemption. The project includes suggestions for constructing a counter-reading workshop.
