  • Believing that the parish church possesses a collective psyche, the project then posits the conviction that that psyche, or angelos (angel), manifests shadow. Easily neglected or denied, the repressed shadow is then capable of actuating the split-off inferior, unattractive, too frequently feminine, side of psyche in such phenomenological forms as projection and scapegoating. Raising the unconscious to the conscious level is not viewed as optional, but mandatory. Two parish church case studies of conflict support the project's thesis, as well as a chapter devoted to the ontology of evil. Psychologically, the trinitarian image of God is found to be inadequate. God's nature is more completely symbolized within the quaternity. Satan, indeed, shadow, is to be interpreted as a vital part of creation, not to be nullified by negativity but positively appropriated within a paradoxical unity.
