- The Mexican cult of Our Lady of Guadalupe is the oldest Christian tradition of the Americas. It was born out of the unique conquest of the Aztecs by the Spaniards who freely intermarried with the indigenous. Called a master symbol by Eric Wolf, Guadalupe embodies the ancient Aztec symbols with the Christian faith in the person the Blessed Virgin Mary, who initiated the New World tradition by requesting a church built to her honor. The poor native, Juan Diego, was her spokesman. This doctoral project looks at Guadalupe in the context of an Hispanic Catholic parish on the Westside of San Antonio, Texas, with the intent to evaluate its theological validity within the teachings of Catholic Mariology.
