  • This thesis proposes cinematherapy as a potentially useful therapeutic tool for working with school age children in order to promote spiritual and psychological healing. Utilizing cinematherapy in a Christian counseling setting may further the expression of feelings, beliefs, worldviews, and values by tapping into the narrative medium of popular culture which is familiar and non-threatening to children. Cinematherapy as a therapeutic intervention introduces another level of viewing that focuses on identification and connection with characters in the movie. Movies viewed with an intentional focus as assigned or prescribed in cinematherapy invite reflection, comparison, and analysis that can promote theological formation and psychological development. The power of narrative to shape and influence individuals is demonstrated through reviews of narrative theology and narrative therapy. Narrative serves as the connection between these fields and the newer concept of cinematherapy. The appendixes provide interactivity guides and discussion guides for use with children.
