  • This project contains thirteen studies based on historical research that explain the growth of 19th century American Methodism. It contrasts that to the current membership loss in United Methodism. Ministries that stimulated 19th century growth included the class meeting, wilderness camp meetings, and the work of the circuit rider. By adapting aspects of these ministries in today's context, United Methodism may stem her membership decline and experience renewal. The project encourages the recovery of spiritual and social accountability among United Methodists. It also stresses a commitment to church membership requirements and an emphasis on lay involvement in church ministry.
