  • The eighteenth century Methodist societies were powerful agents of revitalization for the lives of their members and, through them, the surrounding culture. Do the keys of their success have relevancy for contemporary United Methodist congregations slowly declining in numbers and the ability to provide effective ministry to their communities? John Wesley strongly believed in the necessity of all Christians to be involved in small groups. These groups were called to engage in the disciplines of spiritual formation, by which the grace of God transforms the lives of the believer and results in effective ministry.
