  • This thesis paper has been developed to answer the question, 'How can I use the 'intentional practices' named in the work of Diane Butler Bass and the theological vision of Howard Thurman to lead St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church from a maintenance mode to a mission mode?' The author followed this parish from a time of low self-esteem to a position of vitality and less dependence on the diocese. The tool used to observe this change in this parish was ethnographic research and a focus on intentionality of worship, tradition, spirituality and story. The author finds that often change and chaos can be a positive element in the process of the growth and self-esteem that is necessary to move from maintenance to mission.
