- The doctrine of salvation is central to the faith and the life of the church. There is, however, confusion in the church today about the meaning of salvation. One traditional approach to understanding salvation, substitutionary atonement, has been questioned by many contemporary theologians. In this project an eight-week class on understanding salvation today will be designed and taught. The project focuses on the work of five modern Reformed theologians: Gustav Aulen, John Stott, Karl Barth, Jürgen Moltmann, Friedrich Schleiermacher, and Paul Fiddes. The approach to understanding salvation taken by each is described and consideration is given to the contribution each can make to a contemporary understanding of salvation. Scripture passages and a background essay for each of the eight lessons are given. This class was taught to a group of adults at the First Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, in the fall of 1994.
