- This thesis is to show that the symbol of heart (leb) in the Old Testament, reaches its fruition in Jesus the Christ; that is, Jesus standing in a congruent historical relationship with the covenant community of Israel epitomizes the vulnerable heart. Furthermore, Jesus, as epitomizing this symbol, demonstrates that the most significant characteristic of the heart is its vulnerableness to the love of God. Therefore, a secondary premise of this thesis is that human vulnerability, as a posture of faith, is essential to human self-fulfillment. Being penetrated is not necessarily a contradiction to be avoided but can lead to opportunities for human growth and entrance intod the Kingdom of God. In line with this premise, Jesus has been interpreted (functionally) as the Mediator who reveals the Fatherhood of God as grace and compassion on the one hand and, on the other, that the true posture of faith is seen as a vulnerable heart. The last chapter argues that the Fatherhood of God, revealed in Jesus as compassion and grace, contains feminine characteristics which posit genuine vulnerabiity of God's nature which can be held together in an androgynous model.
