  • This project is a qualitative study of competing narratives between scripture and congregation. The wilderness narratives from the Hebrew Scriptures communicate to the church a theological event where God was encountered and the people were sustained. The wilderness narratives create a point of crisis when countered by a culture based on consumerism. The narrative of consumerism is explored as a dominant script for the congregation of First Baptist Church of Marietta. Specific practices of faith are provided as 'counter-text' and a means to equip the congregation to disobey the ideology of consumerism in light of the biblical claims.
