  • This thesis seeks to change the negative image of growing old. Selected elders in the congregation can be trained to act as mentors to younger individuals and couples, and to model and teach conscious aging, thereby applying their wisdom to the ministry of pastoral care and increasing their visibility within their congregations. Bowen Family Systems Theory and a systems-oriented theology are brought together to achieve a unique understanding of how elders can function more effectively in the family, church, and community.
