- This project examines the dynamics of pastoral and chaplaincy ministry in a time of rapid, unwanted social change, through a detailed historical study of Episcopal chaplains--including Charles Todd Quintard, Randolph Harrison McKim, and Anthony Toomer Porter--in Confederate service during the US Civil War. These chaplains are sustained and enabled by a strong sense of God's providence and by a clear vision of 'calling' understood through a rather literal application of the Ordinal of the Episcopal Church. The project discusses worship among nineteenth-century Episcopalians and the church's place in the antebellum South. It is a resource for re-enactors and living-history presenters.
