Abstract
  • Prospect Presbyterian Church identified burnout and a lack of volunteers as a growing problem in the congregation. Weber's bureaucracy provides a lens to explore the congregation's current organizational self-understanding. Then, the study employs Lathrop's primary symbol of assembly to design and introduce a new structure. Church members were interviewed before and after the training to assess shifts in their organizational self-understanding. The juxtaposition of the current self-understanding in 'bureaucracy' with a new metaphor of 'assembly' in both a new design and training for the new design produced increased energy, creativity and anxiety, along with a renewed focus on relationships.
