  • This dissertation-project explores the functions of the Fourth Gospel (John) and four science fiction novels. Science fiction deals with the impact of technological change; gospels with the impact of theological development. Not equal but parallel genres, each seeks change in the reader's life through changing the perception of the world. Miller's 'A Canticle for Leibowitz', Leguin's 'The Word for World Is Forest', Herbert's 'The Dragon in the Sea', and Dick's 'The Man in the High Castle' are compared with the gospel's narrative function and its impact on the reader's life. Conclusions show students' improved understanding of the gospel.
