- The Evangelical Churches of West Africa (ECWA) in Nigeria, though it views traditional methods of healing as anti-Christian and therefore forbids their use, provides little of the counseling, support and direction so important and expected in the Yoruba culture. By way of a discussion of the Yoruba cultural background, a history of the ECWA in Nigeria, and a comparison/contrast of ECWA and traditional care practices, particularly with respect to marriage and death, this study maintains that the church must synthesize a new pastoral care model that reframes traditional Yoruba support systems in Christian terms, specifically the model of the church as an extended family.
