  • This project proposes to enhance connections between preachers, hearers, and the Word by encouraging church members to become more involved with the lessons prior to hearing sermons. In testing this proposition with four groups--those who merely attend worship, those who read the lessons before worship, those who participate in Bible study on the lessons, those who participate in a sermon critique following worship--the project finds that relationships are enhanced when church members feel that they are taken seriously as part of the sermon process. Preaching in the midst of the people rather than from a pulpit is most effective in reducing relational distance, identifying the preacher with members of the congregation.
