  • The purpose of this project was to design and lead a five-day retreat for men and women living with HIV/AIDS called 'Strength for the Journey.' This particular retreat was held in western North Carolina during the fall of 2002. There were twenty-nine participants and fifteen staff who attended the retreat. There was a daily rhythm established of proper nutrition, educational elements, worship times, play, and small group dynamics. The participants learned about the importance of diet, exercise and mental health in living with a terminal disease. They also learned about the importance of story, personal and sacred. The participants had opportunities to experience God's love through accepting attitudes, unconditional love and agape gifts. Relationship building activities were conveyed through small group dynamics and community activities in the craft area. Three goals were set up, measured and achieved during this retreat. Participants experienced reduced anxiety. Participants had an enriched experience of their belovedness in God. Participants gave voice to their spiritual deepening. There were positive changes recorded in each of these assessed goals. The retreat did offer a time of transformation and well-being for the participants living with HIV/AIDS.
