  • The thesis for this study was: How can the study of foundational biblical and theological concepts, and reflection on personal religious experience, empower persons of an affluent United Methodist congregation in the practice of ministry among the poor? The method of study used by the author was the pro-active model as outlined by William Myers in his book, Research in Ministry: A Primer for the Doctor of Ministry Program. The results of the research indicated that 50% of the participants who were not involved in ministries with the poor prior to the study-immersion experience became involved in such ministries following the experience. Additionally, 40% indicated that study alone provided such a motivation. 20% indicated that experience alone provided such a motivation, and 40% indicated that both study and experience led to such a change in their lives. The author concluded that a combination of both study and hands-on experience are necessary in order to motivate persons to be engaged in ministry with the poor.
