  • This project is concerned with developing more adequate pastoral strategies in cases of bereavement. Discussion focuses on the problem of suffering and belief in a God of love. The status and role of traditional and recent theodices within a pastoral context, liturgical issues, including the doctrine of God and Universalism in funeral rites, and the nature of trauma and its personal implications, are all explored. Case studies involving tragic bereavement through suicide by drowning with no body to grieve over; pre-natal bereavement of embryo twins; and a neo-natal death of a seven day old baby are presented. Short-term support of funeral services is considered, along with the establishment and development of longer-term support strategies of a Pastoral team, Pastoral library and Pastoral guidelines. The project is written in the recognition that while healing hurts there can be life after trauma.
