  • Religious violence has been an issue of paramount concern, notably in the time since September 11, 2001. This project is an inquiry carried out by a congregation directly impacted by 9/11. This project explores the questions of why and how religious convictions prompt violence, how perpetrators think and how religious beliefs can be used to inhibit, counteract or overcome religious violence. Critical theories of Rene Girard and R. Scott Appleby on violence and the sacred are engaged, along with indicators of religious corruption, resulting in approaches to assess religious actions and steps toward peace.
