  • This project proposes that preaching, as an invitation to engage in moral deliberation, is an effective means of engaging moral issues provided that it is invitational, collaborative, and respectful of various opinions represented in congregational life. Moral deliberation is a process of thinking about, reflecting on, and making moral decisions. Silence, misunderstanding, and mistrust challenge the church in moral decisions. The project explores 10 moral issues in narrative and non-narrative sermons, evaluating a rural congregation's response and engagement.
