  • An exodus of young adults from the church endangers the future of American religion, a trend influencing the dwindling number of young adults in vocational ministry. The church must change its conversation with young adults if it desires a hopeful future beyond the current generation of pastoral leadership. Through analyzing call narratives of ordained young adults, and by identifying ministry strategies of nurturing congregations, best congregational practices emerge: asking the 'call' question, mentoring, service, leadership opportunities, and connecting with the larger church. These best practices nurture a culture of call that encourages youth and young adults to experience and respond to a vocational call to ministry.
