  • Augustine and Jonathan Edwards shared a focus on the depravity of man which caused them to look to the sovereign grace of an intervening God. The conbination of a low view of man and a high view of God was critical in both the establishment of the early church under Augustine and the the later renewal of American Puritan culture under Edwards. The high view of God is seen in the writings of both scholars, and implications of this theme are seen in Puritan culture and the writings of Jonathan Edwards. The implications of this lost high view of God are examined, as it relates to the modern church's more anthrocentric focus, across most denominational lines, and practical application for church renewal is suggested.
