  • 'Promoting soldiers' First Amendment right to the free exercise of religion is why the military chaplaincy exists. Uniquely, chaplains are employed by both the Department of Defense as well as their ecclesiastical endorsing body. This project is an exploration of the tensions that chaplains experience based on the duality of their authority, citizenship, and commission. Political theology models are used as a framework to guide chaplains through the maze of these tension points.' [This project seeks to answer the question: “Can political theology models mitigate the secular and sacred tensions between the chaplain’s authority, citizenship, and commission as they promote the free exercise of religion?”] -- Leaf [2].
