Word and Deed introduces a missional approach to discipleship that integrates Scripture study and community service. It aims to contribute to the spiritual formation of city congregants as they engage their neighbours. Using action research, sixteen members of a Toronto congregation participated and viewed their life as a context for mission. They studied Christ's discipleship in Matthew's gospel and reflected on the missio Dei, God's missionary character and initiative to redeem his creation.They partnered with agencies to initiate community service. There is evidence that combining Scripture study with engagement is an effective discipleship tool.
