- The purpose of the applied research project was to measure the self-concept of substance abusers in a thirty-day Christian treatment program. There were 29 adult subjects (23 males and 6 females) from two treatment groups. Subjects were given the Tennessee Self Concept Scale (TSCS) as soon after beginning treatment as possible, and mailed the TSCS for retesting 60 days after treatment. Eleven male and four female subjects completed the test/retest. Results indicated that strong value and motivational encouragement is required during and after treatment to ensure a measurable positive change in the self-concept.
