This project was undertaken to determine the extent to which independent school chaplains are trained in and make us of pastoral counseling skills. A research questionnaire was designed and sent to seventy-six chaplains in schools with a religious affiliation. Fifty-one were returned. Statistics and comments were derived from this survey and from contacts with school chaplains in England and the United States. A plan for chaplaincy in an independent school or college is proposed. The project proposes that the chaplaincy would be greatly strengthened by doctoral studies in pastoral counseling. Participation in the American Association of Pastoral Counselors is specifically encouraged.
