Abstract
  • The thesis argues that for more effective funeral sermon construction and preaching, guidelines resulting from the integration of the pastoral care components of listening, prayer, and presence are needed. The author employed a phenomenological method of research to discuss the caring interactions between the preacher and the bereaved. It examined the human phenomenon of grief and loss and emphasized the intentionality of the funeral sermon and pastoral care to deal with the phenomenon of the death of a loved one. The result of this study was a defined set of guidelines that enhanced funeral sermons.
