  • This project documents the effort of a conflicted congregation to build consensus around issues of identity and mission through the development and implementation of a mission statement. Particular emphasis is given to exploring preaching and leadership styles which encourage meaningful change. A process was developed for drafting, revising, and approving a mission statement using sermons, surveys, committee evaluations, and congregational information meetings. This model for change places a high priority on the role of pastor as preacher, liturgist, and theologian. Congregational identity is shaped by the dialogue which takes place when leaders are willing to engage in a public process of self-definition.
