- Unitarian Universalist congregations do not have formal structures for dealing with the conflicts which arise within them. Research was done into the theological basis for dealing with conflict. Literature as well as in-person interviews of Unitarian historians were used to draw a record of how Unitarians and Universalists have dealt with conflicts in the past. Extensive use of personal interviews was employed to gather information from leaders, lay and clergy, of the congregations targeted for the study. The conclusion arrived at was that while there was only one example of a formal system to deal with conflict, there were many under-used informal systems in each congregation.
