- This research project examined changes in Christian married couples who participated in an intensive one-day communication instruction. The seminar was entitled 'Closeness Through Communication' and focused on communication as being essential in generating marital closeness. The fifteen participating couples were African-Americans and members and friends of a local church. The participants completed the pretest questionnaire prior to the communication instruction. The followup was held forty-one days after the workshop and the posttest questionnaire was completed by the same participating couples. The seminar focused on the communication skills, Sensitivity, Openness, Negotiation and Appreciation, which were the modules for the one-day workshop, with accompanying activities. Findings indicated that the couples in this group did not show a significant change in their marital relationships during the forty-one day followup, according to the t-Test and f-Test statistical procedures. Positive changes occurred between the couples in sensitivity, openness and negotiation but not in appreciation skills. Differences also were noted in the changes among the couples based on their education and number of years married.
