  • The thesis of this dissertation is that Lutheran confessional teachings answer the challenges to American mainline religion posed by privatized and individualized religion. Noting the contemporary social phenomenon of people being able to articulate a rather well-defined religious faith while having no involvement in a congregation, the author surveyed current and historical literature regarding popular religion, denominational boundaries, the faith expression of Americans, and Lutheran theology. The author concluded that a reclamation of the unique and specific Lutheran teachings regarding ecclesiology and salvation answers the challenges posed by the phenomenon of belief without belonging.
