Abstract
  • Clergy psychotherapists in parochial settings face crucial questions: Is it appropriate to conduct long-term psychotherapy? Should psychotherapy be conducted with parishioners? Can psychotherapy be effective? This project examines these issues using investigative research and systematic analysis. Psychotherapeutic principles criticize methods that compromise boundaries. In the parochial setting dual role relationships and symbiotic drives compromise the therapist's anonymity and neutrality. The project argues that these dynamics become opportunities for interpretation and analysis. The project proposes strategies and parameters to aid the psychotherapeutic process. Effective pastoral psychotherapy can be accomplished when issues are managed with care and caution.
