  • This final project was designed to address the problem of illiteracy hampering adults at Berean Missionary Baptist Church in Brooklyn, New York. The acknowledgment of illiteracy is the first step toward the empowerment of African Americans. The methodologies used to achieve these goals were surveys, pretests, posttests, questionnaires, and qualitative research. There were six, ninety-minute sessions which focused on adult literacy, economic and spiritual empowerment. At the conclusion of the six-week sessions, all the adults demonstrated an increased ability in reading competency skills. This model is useful for teaching adults how to empower themselves through literacy.
