Abstract

This thesis proposes a strategy for mainline new church preaching. Drawing from Augustine, from church planters in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and from my own experience, I propose that the three central themes of mainline new church preaching are: hospitality, teaching, and prophetic proclamation. This thesis also breaks new ground by incorporating newcomers/seekers into the sermon formation process. While this thesis offers mainline new church planters a model for effective preaching, it also offers valuable lessons to all mainline preachers who struggle to better connect with a generation of people who are increasingly un-churched, de-churched, and uninterested in church.
