  • The assumption in the past has been that once an adoption was completed adoptees, adopted parents, and birth parents settled down to live contented lives. Through a review of the literature and interviews with those touched by adoption, I have discovered that the reality for many is pain and suffering. Using a prism of family systems theory, I conclude that the dysfunctional adopted family is engaged in an attempt to deny its adoptive status. The consequence is that the family ends up mired in guilt, shame, fear, and unresolved grief, and needs to be touched by God's healing grace.
